THE FIRST APPEALS BEFORE THE PRESS COUNCIL ON THURSDAY

Belgrade, September 27, 2011 (Danas) - Since the Press Council began its work in Serbia ten days ago, the Appeals Commission of this body has received two complaints on the content in the print media, said Gordana Novakovic, Secretary General of the Press Council.

According to her, the complaint was sent by a NGO, while the "author" of the second complaint was a private entity. The first session of the Commission scheduled for Thursday when the complaints will be discussed.

Novakovic said that the NGO appeal is related to revealing the identity of victims of domestic violence, which presents violation of the Code of Journalists of Serbia. The second appeal refers to something that has not been published yet: the author of this appeal seeks from the Press Council to act preventively. However, this body has no such authority.

To recall, Independent Journalists' Association of Serbia (NUNS), the Journalists' Association of Serbia (UNS), the Media Association and the Local Press are the founders of this first self-regulatory body for print media in Serbia that will take care of compliance of published media content with the Code of Journalists. Appeals sent to the Press Council Appeals Commission can be related only to the content published in the last three months and in the media who have joined the Council.
