MORE BALANCED REPORTING ON EU THAN IN 2010

Belgrade, March 17, 2012 (Danas) - Comparing to 2010, reporting of media on Serbia's integration into EU was more balanced and covered more topics on EU. However, according to the BBC Media Action research, the reporting was limited to protocol rather than responding to the interest of public.

The research done by BBC Media Action, based on the analysis of content of 38 media from September last year, shows that since the end of 2011, the image of EU in media has been more neutral. In this period, the number of qualified stories about EU has risen to 44 percent. The reports on this topic showed mostly officials, while the "voice of the people" is heard in only 8 percent of TV reports.

Last year's results on research of media reporting on EU topics, on the other hand, showed that 46 percent of TV, 49 percent of print and 58 percent of radio reporting had a positive approach to EU issues, while almost all others were neutral. The difference in relation to the last year is the fact that, according to the latest results, there have been much more balanced reports. The results of the research show that media mainly cover EU integration issues as political and economic stories, often based on protocol of events.
