MEDIA OWNERS OR FINANCIERS STILL NOT KNOWN

Belgrade, December 15, 2012 (Politika) - It is in the interest of the public to know who are the owners of media in Serbia. Answer to this question can be obtained only with political will, which is usually missing, but is often the main factor in deciding if certain laws would be brought to regulate this area, it was concluded yesterday at the round table dedicated to the problem of ownership in media, organized in Belgrade by the Anti-Corruption Agency.

According to the president of UNS, the solution to this problem may be found in enacting the law prescribing that future owners of media must present themselves in person and say why they are buying certain media and what the future editorial policy of the media would be.

18 out of 30 media, dealt with by the Anti-Corruption Council in its report for 2011, have not had transparent ownership structure.
