DEBATE ON MEDIA FREEDOM

Belgrade, January 29, 2013 (Pregled) - Culture and Media Minister Bratislav Petkovic announced a public debate on media laws, noting his expectations that the Action Plan on media laws stipulating their adoption by 2016 would be implemented and respected in spite of short deadlines.

At the Parliament's Culture and Information Committee's public hearing on media freedom, Petkovic emphasized freedom of media as one of the most important goals of the government and the ministry and that he as the Minister would do everything in his power to preserve media freedom and support to media.

"We are aware that all media, print in particular, are in economic downturn and that the increase of interest in electronic media is the product of technological era that we live in. However, the state must prevent extinction of the print media, and everybody should step in and help us in that", Petkovic concluded.
