No unity over the role of the state in the media

Novi Pazar, March 12, 2012. (Beta) - At the public debate on the draft Law on Public Information held in Novi Pazar, representatives of the private media and media owned by local governments have expressed different arguments about the announced withdrawal of the state of media ownership.

Municipal media from several cities were unanimous in their assessment that the radio and TV stations would not be able to survive without state funds, while private media supported the Draft Law and suggested a number of adjustments so as to make the document clearer and prevent different interpretations.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Media, Gordana Predic, said that the debate in Novi Pazar was a great help to the working group with the task to propose legal solutions. She stressed out that withdrawal of the state from media ownership was strategic position of the state and that it was important to find adequate solution for that.
