WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY

Belgrade, May 5, 2013 (RTS) - The Press Freedom Day is being globally marked today, with messages sent around the world that all media professionals should work without fear of retribution, pressures and violence they are exposed to.

In the joint message, the UN Secretary General Ban Kimun and UNESCO Secretary General Irina Bokova say that the freedom of expression is crucial for development of free and democratic society and necessity of safe environment for all to live and speak freely and openly, without fearing the reprisal.

"More than 600 journalists have been murdered in the last ten years, many of them on their assignments of reporting from conflict areas. Nine of ten cases of murders of journalists remain unsolved and perpetrators unpunished. Too many media workers are exposed to intimidation, threats and violence. We simply have to find the solution for such injustice and insecurity", it was concluded in the message.
