TV – STILL MOST POWERFUL MEDIA

Belgrade, May 30, 2013 (Novi magazin) - Despite the frequent, mostly catastrophic announcements and expectations from the prospects of television, it continues to be the most powerful and most influential media in the world as well as in Serbia.

Citizens of Serbia spend, on average, more than five hours a day in the room where the TV set is on, and Serbia is among the leading countries in the world, but the very first in Europe, followed by Macedonia, Hungary, Greece, Croatia and Romania.

In the period from 2006 until 2012, with the exception of 2010, the first program of RTS was the most watched channel in the country. However, the situation has changed as of March 2013 - the commercial TV station TV Pink has jumped in front of RTS 1 and now occupies the first position in the audience share. The public service broadcaster has been brought to almost impossible situation to be less and less competitive to other TV stations, obviously with the unresolved issue of financing. Should this trend continue, it is not unlikely that the national and regional public service broadcasting would slowly but surely deteriorate.

Third on the list of the most watched TV stations is TV Prva with respectable growth in audience share in the last few years, followed by B92, Happy and RTS 2. On the general note, the total audience share has a tendency of declining in the last couple of years, which is a consequence, before all, of greater number of channels, richer, but not necessarily more qualitative, program offer.
