CODE BROKEN BY PUBLISHING RAPE VICTIM’S TESTIMONY
Belgrade, August 30, 2013 (Press Council) - The Press Council has found that provisions of the Journalists' Code protecting the privacy have been violated by publishing the testimony of a rape victim in yesterday's dailies, with the exception of Politika and Danas.
The fact that the police have published the details of the crime does not justify the act of journalists and media, who are obliged to protect the right of the victim.
The Press Council said it was necessary to reach an agreement and consensus of journalists, editors and publishers on education of journalists on respect of ethical standards when it came to sensitive events such as this.
