Protests Over Draft Information Legislation

BELGRADE, July 19, 2002 - A number of NGOs have protested at draft legislation on free access to information, saying that the law is not aimed at making things easier for journalists but breaking people's allegiances. "The legislation aims to give people guarantees that they can ask for official information on all issues concerning them and their well-being but only some of this information will be of interest to the media," said the head of the drafting team, Miroljub Radojkovic. The Committee of Lawyers for Human Rights, the Centre for Policy Studiers, the Forum for Ethnic Relations and the European Movement in Serbia took part in drafting the legislation.
