NGO Condemns Jailing of Editor

BELGRADE, November 22, 2002 – The Centre for Balkan Integration yesterday condemned the jailing of Vladislav Asanin, former editor-in-chief of Podgorica daily Dan for republishing an article from Zagreb weekly Nacional. In its statement the CBI describes as most alarming the fact that the verdict and sentence came after Montenegro’s ruling Democratic Party of Socialist achieved an absolute victory in parliamentary elections. This, it says, could imply that the authorities will have a problematic attitude to media in the period ahead.
