Access to Information bill gets the green light

BELGRADE, 20 May, 2003 -- The preliminary Access to Information of Public Importance bill has been posted on the Serbian Government’s website with a note explaining that the bill has received the “green light” from all relevant ministries, although the text as a whole has yet to be subjected to parliamentary debate. The draft legislation, containing 52 articles, contains detailed regulation of the media and the right of citizens to request, and receive access to, information of public importance. The bill also notes information to which such access will not be granted and details fines that state bodies will be forced to pay if they deny private citizens or media companies free access to information.
