Opposition to minority media proposal

NOVI SAD, September 12, 2003 – The chairman of the Vojvodina Assembly’s Information Committee, Djordje Subotic yesterday expressed reservations about a proposal to have minority councils take over publishing rights of minority-language media. The proposal had been made by Information Secretary Rafail Ruskovski had proposed the move. Subotic said that he feared it would lead to minority media becoming party media and also claimed that it would violate the provisions of the Vojvodina Statute which defines these media as using the languages of national minorities rather than being operated by national minorities.
