Journalists protest

BELGRADE, September 8, 2003 – The Association of Serbian Journalists protested on September 5 over the Duvan Company’s refusal to distribute daily Balkan. Duvan is owned by businessman Stanko “Cane” Subotic. The Association noted that under the law companies engaged in the sale of newspapers are not permitted to refuse distributing any paper without a justified business reasons and may not stipulate conditions which breach market principles. The Association’s statement describes Duvan’s refusal to distribute Balkan as violating the freedom of press and as a precedent which should not go unsanctioned.
