SEEMO: PROTECTION OF DAILY EDITOR

VIENNA, June 18, 2005 – South East Europe Media Organization (SEEMO) expressed their deep concern about recent threats against the Editor-in-chief of Belgrade daily Danas, Grujica Spasovic. SEEMO urged the Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and Police Minister Dragan Jocic to investigate the death threats and to protect Spasovic. The media organization also reminded that the editor received death threats on June 11, from the person identifying himself as “the security” of Ratko Mladic. “SEEMO urges authorities to do everything in your power to urgently investigate this threat and to take all necessary steps to protect the life of Grujica Spasovic. We would like to remind that a safe working environment for journalists, without any pressure, is a fundamental principle in every democratic society”, said in the statement of this media organization.
