TADIĆ SIGNS BROADCASTING LAW CHANGES

BELGRADE, September 5, 2006 (Beta)- Serbian President Boris Tadić signed into law the changes made to the Broadcasting Law. He had previously refused to do so and had sent it back to the parliament for further discussions. The changes were confirmed again by the Serbian Parliament on September 29, despite the continued protests of various journalist associations and international organizations. The law will take effect on October 11. In July when it was passed by the parliament for the first time, Tadić did not sign it because he stated that the changes and additions to the law would seriously infringe on the independent work of the Republic Broadcasting Agency and would violate the principle of equality for all participating in the competition for receiving frequencies and broadcasting licenses. The Broadcasting Law was originally adopted in 2002.
