IFJ: 134 JOURNALISTS KILLED IN 2007

BRUSSELS, 1 January 2008 (Beta) - At least 134 reporters were murdered last year, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) says.

The majority of casualties occurred in Iraq, the organization's report shows.

Middle East remains the most dangerous region for journalist to work in, with a death toll of 68, followed by Somalia where eight reporters died.

Pakistan, Mexico and Sri Lanka are also in the list.

ICJ president Jim Boumelha said that violence against journalists, who are targeted while performing their duties in dangerous places, remains high.

In addition to the 134 reporters who were killed while working, a further 37 died in accidents.
